The information on this website will serve to demonstrate why roll-coupling is necessary - not an alternative. Research indicates that under Canadian weights and dimensions that pintle hitches should not be used on tri-drive trucks or to attach heavy trailers to tow vehicles in any configuration other than C-trailns.

The technology used to attach heavy trailers to trucks was developed almost a century ago. Roll-coupling.pdf illustrates why roll-coupling is necessary for safe & productive operation of heavy truck/trailer combinations in Canada.
1. Pintle hitches cannot provide trailer stability feedback to the truck driver. If the truck driver does not know the trailer is becoming unstable it follows that the truck driver can not prevent an accident from occurring.
2. Pintle hitches do not provide roll-coupling which means that the driver cannot use the mass of the truck to prevent the trailer from rolling over. Truck combinations (not roll-coupled) with tridem pony trailers & quad full trailers and A-trains do not meet minimum TAC performance standards and are subject to weight caps under the MoU in Canada.
Roll-coupling warns drivers when trailers are becoming unstable and enables the drivers to take remedial action to prevent accidents from occurring.
Building Safer Trailers is Good Business!

Regulations vary in different countries but the fact of the matter is that roll-coupling improves safety for vehicles combinations of any size or shape.
